NEW DETAILS: Man at center of Abbe Center standoff dies

MARION (KWWL) -- Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner confirms that a patient at a Linn County care facility has died after shooting himself during an armed standoff.

Linn County Sheriff's deputies were called to the Abbe Center for Community Care on County Home Road shortly after 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night. They say a patient who had been out on a pass had returned with a gun.

Staff members moved patients away from the danger while negotiators talked with the man.

Just after 1:30 Wednesday morning, they say the man, 63-year old William Null, went outside where he shot himself.

He was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was later transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals where he died.

Sheriff Gardner tells KWWL that the Abbe Center doesn't have security and only non-violent patients are housed there.  He says there was no reason to believe that Null would do something like this.
