UPDATE: Eight escape Cedar Rapids apartment fire

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids fire department says eight people escaped an apartment fire on 4th Avenue SW Tuesday afternoon.

The fire started around noon, and firefighters arrived to find the two story apartment building with flames and smoke coming from the front door and windows of Apartment #6 on the second floor. The flames burned through the roof and an exterior wall. Two other apartments had water damage.

A 35-year-old woman was in Apartment #6 when the fire started, but was outside when the fire department arrived. Five other adults, two children and a dog escaped from other units in the building.

All of the people living in the building have been displaced until repairs can be made and the utilities reconnected. The American Red Cross and Salvation Army are assisting the families.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
