DES MOINES (KWWL) --  Traffic deaths in Iowa rose slightly in 2010, compared with 2009, but the number was far below the record of 912 set in 1970.

The Iowa Transportation Department put last year's number at 391, based on the latest data. The 2009 figure was 371.

Officials told The Des Moines Register that the struggling economy, raised gas prices and increased highway safety combined to keep the total less than 400 for only the third time since World War II.

Also, Iowa State Patrol chief Patrick Hoye says law enforcement is focused on reducing violations that lead to fatalities, including drunken driving and speeding.
