Cedar Rapids Salvation Army surpasses Red Kettle goal

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Thanks to a surge in year-end giving, the Cedar Rapids Salvation Army was able to surpass its Christmas fundraising goal by more than $4,500.

With still more money to be counted, they raised $672,510.40 to date, above their $668,000 goal.

The kettles finished with two $20,000+ days.  Those were on Dec. 23, and Dec. 24.  Dec. 23 set a new single day collection record with $22,335.94 collected that day.  The previous single day record of $20,526.29 was set on Christmas Eve 2009.

The kettles also set a total fundraising record despite weather concerns.  Bell ringing at area stores collected $294,160.20 between Nov. 16, and Dec. 24.  The previous record was $278,526.92 set in 2009.

After the bells stop ringing on Christmas Eve, donations are collected through mail, walk-in, phone and online.  Those are processed and credited toward the campaign goal into January.

Last year's fundraising set a record, with $687,451.15 collected. The Salvation Army believes they can break that record as well.
