Branstad names Mauro as new labor commissioner

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Gov.-elect Terry Branstad named Democratic Secretary of State Michael Mauro as the state's labor commissioner Thursday.

Mauro lost his bid for reelection in the November election to Republican challenger Matt Schultz.

"Michael Mauro has been a dedicated and effective public servant for many years," said Branstad. "As Labor Commissioner Michael will be responsible for programs designed to protect the safety, health, and security of Iowa's workforce. I am proud to nominate him for this important role and he has my full confidence. I was impressed with the fair and even way he administered election laws and how he effectively managed the Iowa secretary of state's office."

Mauro's term as labor commissioner will begin May 1 but Mauro will begin working as a deputy director at Iowa Workforce Development on Jan. 3., developing special projects and working with current labor director David Neil to assure a smooth transition.
