Insight Bowl, Hawkeye trouble hot topics for fans

MARION (KWWL) -- High expectations, drug-related arrests, and a bowl game. Those were all discussed live on WMT's Hawkeye Huddle radio show live at Cocktails and Company in Marion on Tuesday night.

Some fans, like Kim Rehn of Marion, said this year was a disappointing one for their favorite team. "The players getting caught with drugs and their academic status, I think it's really unfortunate because a lot of kids look up to them, and we really want to see them as role models," said Rehn.

Others told us the Hawkeyes' accomplishments have been unfairly overshadowed by their problems.

"Every program has its problems, and since we're from the state of Iowa and the Hawkeyes are the biggest thing in the state, you know, it's probably going to be blown up more than it should," said Sean Tritle, also of Marion.

However, despite the controversy, most fans at Cocktails seemed to be concentrating on one thing: their team on the big screen.

"I think that it's definitely affected the interest in the bowl," said Laurie Worden of Cedar Rapids, "but the really good part is that a lot of the kids are hard workers and they're keeping their noses clean, they get a chance to play."
