Illegal immigrant with ties to Black Hawk County gets prison time

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Mexican man who entered the U.S. illegally after being convicted of an aggravated felony has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison.

Lucas Castaneda-Romero, 31, was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty on August 18, 2010, to illegal reentry.

Castaneda-Romero was removed from the United States on December 31, 2007 after being convicted of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon in Houston, Texas.

He was arrested again by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on June 20, 2010, after an arrest in Black Hawk County for Fifth Degree Theft and Harassment of a Public Official.

Castaneda-Romero admitted he had illegally reentered the country.  He had been deported four times, including May 31, 2000, June 13, 2001, March 4, 2005 and December 31, 2007. He had also been informally deported on 16 additional occasions.

Castaneda-Romero was sentenced to 87 months in prison. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term.  There is no parole in the federal system. He is subject to removal from the United States after serving his prison term.
