How to get rid of your Christmas tree in Cedar Rapids

Posted:

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Those living in Cedar Rapids have several options for getting rid of their Christmas trees this year.

For live trees that are unflocked, you can cut the tree into three-foot sections and put it out on the curb on your normal collection day for free pick-up, or, you can take the tree to the Indian Creek Nature Center where it will be chipped and used as mulch on the Sac and Fox Trail system.

Either way, you need to remove all ornaments, wires and decorations along with the stand, tinsel and tree bags.

If you have a live, flocked tree, it must be cut into three-foot sections and placed on the curb on your normal collection day for garbage pick-up.  A $1.50 garbage sticker is not needed if it is put out during the month of January 2011.

Finally, if you have an artificial tree, and it can be separated into three-foot sections, it can be placed out on the curb on your normal collection day for free pick-up during the month of January 2011.  If the tree cannot be separated into three-foot sections, you need to call the Solid Waste & Recycling Office at (319) 286-5897 to set up a special pick-up of your tree. There will be a $5.00 charge to pick up artificial trees that are not broken into smaller sections.
