Hawkeyes fans are Arizona bound

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)-- Many airports are filled with travelers heading home after the holidays.  But here in eastern Iowa, dozens of people are now going on vacation to see the Hawkeyes play in the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Arizona.  And fans are pumped for the history-making match up against Mizzou.

The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids was a sea of black and gold Sunday morning as the first big group of Hawkeye fans began their journey to the Insight Bowl.

"We're very excited.  We go to all the home and away games.  For many years, we've made all the bowl games.  So it's an opportunity to see the Hawks try it one more time," said Anthony Leo.

But for some, the big game will be a new experience.

"Well we've never been to a bowl game before.  We're really excited, and I'm just really psyched to see the Hawkeyes.  I've also never been to Arizona, and I'm really excited about the warm weather," Maxwell Tiedemann said.

Both younger and more seasoned fans agreed it's a game that just can't be missed.

"Oh yes.  We've done this lots of times," said one group of fans.

"We just are excited to see Rick Stanzi play his last game and Adrian Clayborn and so forth.  And we want to see them go out on an upward note hopefully," said Leo.

Despite the recent trouble with a few Iowa players, Hawks fans still feel confident in their team.

"I think the team is going to step up.  I think they'll look good," said Doris Herrnn.

"I think they've probably found a new focus.  They're going to be ready to play harder and have a better result," Leo said.

And they're just hoping that a big turn out of Iowa fans will only help ensure a Hawkeye victory.

The Insight Bowl is Tuesday.  Kick-off is 9 p.m. central time.  Be sure to look for KWWL's coverage from Arizona.
