Runners take to the streets in winter

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Many runners just dread the treadmill.  Instead of running in a gym many enjoy bundling up and taking to the streets. Before getting out in the slush and snowy streets its important to be prepared and careful.

"A really big ice storm may keep us inside, but other than that we will be out here," said Jacob Tayloe, Cedar Falls runner.

Running outside in this winter weather may come with a price.

"We have defiantly heard stories of people falling and blooding their face, banging their knee and having to take time off because things were swollen or injured," said Scott Gall, Co-Owner of the Runner's Flat in Cedar Falls.

Scott Gall is a veteran runner, running his first race at the age of nine. He suggests when running outside to be careful for not only for ice on the roadways, but also to watch out for cars and plows.

"Some people will plow their sidewalks some won't and so I just tend to run in the street. You need to run against traffic so you see what's coming at you. Try to make yourself visible with reflective gear or lights and then be ready to jump out of the way," said Gall.

Gall also suggests wearing something on your shoes so you don't slip such as snowshoes or Yaktrax.  There is also a brand called Get a Grip.
