Dubuque's Hempstead High School battling racism

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Hempstead High School officials say they're being proactive in erasing racial tension and rumors at school.

Administrators asked students this week to not wear solid-white t-shirts to class, as rumors had indicated some might. Administrators said the shirts could be perceived to represent white supremacy.

School principal Lee Kolker said a small number of students who wore the plain white shirts to school this week were asked to change or go home early.

The Dubuque Police Department confirmed it had more than four officers at the school Tuesday as a precautionary measure.

Hempstead High School students are now on winter break until after the new year.
