Snow cause traffic jam in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Snow made travel difficult in many parts of Eastern Iowa, generally above Highway 20 Monday night. That included Dubuque and early Monday, in the Key City, there were so many accidents that emergency crews had trouble getting to all of them.

Crews have been working to clear the streets, especially the hills, but for a few hours Monday night the tri-states dealt with mother nature.

The snow started to fall, just before afternoon rush hour in Dubuque on Monday. And at the same time, police and emergency responders were trying to get to dozens of accidents.

"There's been quite an up tick. Usually this time of year we see a lot more accidental falls, a few skiing accidents," said emergency room Dr. Clark Williams.

Doctors at both The Finely Hospital and Mercy in Dubuque say they had a few patients in from car accident, but not major injuries. Mercy hospital saw four patients who had injuries from falling on ice or snow.

"Drive slowly, walk slowly if you don't have to drive or walk don't. Of course avoid alcohol," Dr. Williams said.

Doctors say this isn't the worst they've see but with the official start of winter on Tuesday, they're reminding everyone to be careful.

"You'd think falling from standing would be relatively safe but you're falling onto a hard surface," Williams said.

Doctors also say they tend to see an increase in heart problems this time of year. And it usually has nothing to do with what you eat around the holidays but instead people who are trying to clear the snow from sidewalks. Doctors remind everyone to be cautious.
