Waterloo/Cedar Falls Salvation Army finds gold coin

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Waterloo/Cedar Falls Salvation Army has struck gold.

Someone donated a 1998 one ounce Gold Liberty Coin into a red kettle at the Hy-Vee located on University Avenue and Progress Avenue on Saturday.  The coin is currently valued at $1,380.

"Anticipation has been building as the kettle drive is coming to a close whether or not we would receive a gold coin this year.  While it has become a tradition to receive the coin, we never count on it, and are blessed by the generosity of the anonymous donor each year," Salvation Army Captain Rob Whitney said in a written statement.

Whitney says the goal of this year's Red Kettle Campaign is $546,000, which still has not been met.  Donations are behind last year's pace.

You can donate by dropping money into any red kettle outside area businesses, but you can also mail in a donation.

Send donations to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 867, Waterloo, IA 50704.
