Gizzard Shad efforts succeeding

KEOSAUQUA (KWWL)--  Department of Natural Resources officials in Van Buren County say the effort to rid Lake Sugema of gizzard shad appears to be working. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and other game fish.

The lake was treated with a low dose chemical that causes a drawn out fish kill that targets the gizzard shad. A state biologist says some game fish have been lost, but the alternative to the treatment was to drain the lake.

Officials hope to know in the spring how effective the chemical treatment is.
