Power turned off at Cedar Falls nature preserve

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- This weekend, Hartman Reserve Nature Center decided to switch its power off.

The Cedar Falls Reserve invited families to participate in activities without relying on electricity.

Those included crafts, snowshoeing, bird watching, reading by candlelight and demonstrations on fire-lighting.

The "Power Off Weekend" is part of the global movement known as the "Touchwood Project" based in England.

The program helps people to reduce their carbon footprint.

This event was the first of four that will be held throughout the year at the reserve.

Officials say each power off weekend will coincide with the seasonal solstices and equinoxes.
