Pets may not be the best holiday gift

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A popular present this time of year for many families is getting a pet.

But for many families the allure of a pet quickly fades with the reality of taking care of a pet.

The Cedar Bend Humane Society says they see a lot of pets returned a few months after the holidays.

They say families need to research exactly what they are getting into before they bring a pet home.

"If you are getting it for your own family, or for your kids as a gift, you really need to consider what you're getting into, that it's a responsibility," says Cedar Bend Vet Technician Vania Warns. "Sometimes if you get it for your kids, they take interest in the pet, especially if it's a puppy at first. Then it gets old for the kids. So you want to make sure your kid and your family knows the commitment that's being involved in taking in a new member of the family."

The Cedar Bend Humane Society says they will work with families to make sure they have the right pet for them and help families understand all that goes into owning a pet.
