"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repealed

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -- In a landmark vote for gay rights, the U.S. Senate voted to overturn the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

The bill now goes to President Barack Obama, who says he looks forward to signing it into law.

This means gays and lesbians will now be able to openly serve in the military and acknowledge their sexual orientation without fear of being kicked out.

More than 13,500 service members have been discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," since it began in 1993.
