Christmas Giveaway helps families this holiday season

WATERLOO (KWWL) For many people, it just doesn't feel like Christmas without family, food and presents.

St. Vincent De Paul, with the help of many churches and organizations, held its annual Christmas Giveaway Saturday.

The National Cattle Congress Pavilion in Waterloo is once again transformed into a maze of tables.

Lines of people made their way through the piles of toys and clothes, looking for just the right gift.

"She wanted a Barbie doll and a doll, right?"

Ella Laura is "shopping" for one daughter and five boys.

"My oldest is 9, 7, 6, 3, 1 and six months," she said.

For more than 50 years, people have been able to get food and toys for Christmas at this annual giveaway.

"I got six babies. This means a lot. It means a lot to a lot of people, too," said Ella Laura.

Organizers expected to giveaway more than 500 toys this year.

Registrations were taken back in November, and they say the need is up 20 percent from last year.

"Three large toys for kids and three stocking stuffers and stuffed animals and then we do have some clothing they can have clothes and coats," said Karen Buchanan with St. Vincent De Paul.

But selecting the items wasn't the end of the line, gift wrapping was also available.

"We just want people to have a Merry Christmas and to have food and toys," said Buchanan.

Thanks to donations and volunteers, hundreds of people will have a little more under the tree this Christmas.
