Do-it-yourself Christmas gifts are thrifty alternative

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- We're just a week away from Christmas and perhaps you're feeling an empty wallet. But you don't have to purchase a big gift to give something meaningful. It turns out, many people are getting creative with Christmas presents this year and at almost not cost.

"And I enjoy making gifts," Evelyn Boyce said. Boyce is busy getting ready for Christmas.

"I'm here buying fabric to make pillow cases for my little great nephew for Christmas," Boyce said.

She says it's the perfect way to give a meaningful gift.

"I think it's more of a personal type thing. I have John Deere fabric because he thinks there's nothing better than a John Deere," Boyce said.

But Boyce is not alone, managers at Hobby Lobby say they've seen a rise in do it yourself Christmas gifts this year.

"You can start at $1.99 and up," store employee Virginia Cutsforth said.

She says you can decorate your own ornaments, make a tie fleece blanket, make a picture frame, glassware and so much more. All for an affordable price.

"People are making more items now. And I think its because of the economy. This is there way of doing something that will mean something to someone else," Cutsforth said.

"It's something that they can cherish and keep forever and remember me," Boyce said.

And it's a memory Boyce says is worth a much more than words can say.
