Preschool causes divide in Des Moines

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa lawmakers are divided over the benefits of state-funded preschool for 4-year-olds.

At a forum Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader and Republican Paul McKinley called the program questionable. He suggested the state should cut spending and allow parents to choose between public and private preschool programs.

Senate President Jack Kibbie says Democrats will protect the program and doesn't plan any changes.

Education officials have said the program is designed to increase the number of Iowa children participating in quality preschool programs.
