DNR warns anglers to check the ice

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Ice anglers are being urged to check the ice before they step out on lakes, rivers, streams and ponds.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says the recent blast of cold weather is causing ice to form throughout the state.

They say you need to check to see if the ice is thick enough to support the weight first.

The ice should be at least four inches thick to support a person and at least five inches for all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.
