Age appropriate toys important this year

IOWA CITY (KWWL)-- The question of the season isn't whether there's a specific toy that's dangerous this year, but if toys are age appropriate.

"If you are looking for a gift for a 3 year old don't be looking at those gifts that have five and above," University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics toy safety expert Pam Hoogerwerf said.

Pam Hoogerwerf with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is an expert in toy safety. She says you should buy not only with your child's age in mind, but also their abilities.

"You need to certainly keep in mind your own child and their maturity level. If they are a toddler that still really likes to put things in their mouth yet the box says its ok for the age and there is little pieces, then you as the parent need to stop and think that is not the appropriate gift for my child," Hoogerwerf said.

Tucked away at the University of Iowa Hospital is the Safety Store. There, parents can get safety items for their children. Hoogerwerf says even these types of presents are important.

"It's very important to make sure they have the correct safety gear on so if its a bike involved, the helmet is a very important component before they get on that bike," Hoogerwerf said.

It's not just the toys that can present dangers. Experts say some kids can get hurt simply unwrapping the presents. That's from sharp objects like knives being used to cut open the boxes. Once again, experts stress using age appropriate tools or helping the kids with unwrapping.
