More Iowa kids live in poverty


DES MOINES (KWWL)--  More children in Iowa are now living in poverty. The number of children receiving food assistance has increased more than 140% since 2000, while children living in poverty grew by 45%.

Iowa Kids count released the data compiled by the Child and Family Policy Center on Tuesday. The report also showed that nearly 30% more kids were eligible for free or reduced-price school lunches in 2009.  There was also a 35% increase in child abuse and neglect incidents in the same time period.
