Prevention & treatment better than screening for preventing ovarian cancer

Posted:

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA (KWWL) -- A study finds screening for ovarian cancer is unlikely to save many lives.

Researchers at the Duke Cancer Institute used a computer-based model to project that routinely screening women over age 50 would reduce ovarian-cancer related deaths by only 11 percent.

Researchers suggest better prevention and treatment methods may be more beneficial than screening.

The most commonly used biomarker for ovarian cancer screening is CA-125, but is also related to other disorders.
