New business provides opportunity for recent graduates

IOWA CITY (KWWL)- Recent college graduate Jocelyn Pluta is a qualified, talented, and passionate educator.

But her credentials haven't yet materialized in to landing a full-time job

''It was impossible to find any openings so that was really discouraging,'' she said.

Pluta says she's not alone.  Many of her former classmates are finding the education field difficult to break into.

''I have a couple friends right now that are either subbing or working as associates , para-professionals just trying to get their foot in the door.''

With a tough economy, comes a less conventional opportunity.

This past September Brian Lynch launched an educational assistance service called Mr. Tutor. He's hiring aspiring teachers like Pluta who haven't gotten their break yet.

''This I think is a perfect foundation for those young graduates of college that are trying to get into the educational plane,'' Lynch said.

From offering a wide variety of subject matters to even preparatory driver education courses, Mr. Tutor is giving its clients a unique opportunity as well, in the comfort of their own homes.

''It build rapport with the tutor and it helps the educational process because the student feels real comfortable,'' Lynch said.

So for Pluta, no full-time job, no problem.  Between substitute teaching and her job with Mr. Tutor, she is still working close to 40 hours a week.

More importantly, she continues to sharpen her skills and grow within her field, making her more marketable as she looks to land that first full-time job.
