New business hoping to spur Kimball Ridge revitalization

WATERLOO (KWWL) --There are new businesses opening in Waterloo.  But this time, it's not in the downtown, or the busy shopping district along San Marnan Drive.  It's another area that's seeing the development.

Kimball Ridge is an established neighborhood and business community in Waterloo.  But many of the buildings have been here for a long time.  So Cabin Coffee Company hopes its new facility will help attract new businesses here.

The Kimball Ridge Association agrees.  Palace Clothiers is already set to open at Kimball Ridge soon.  It is new capital investment that looks to keep people coming to the neighborhood for their shopping and dining needs.

"I think you can see that this area is really growing and developing.  And for those folks that live in this area, I think more and more, you're seeing it as an option of a place you can go that can really meet all of your needs," said Heidi Rush, Vice President of the Kimball Ridge Association.

Cabin Coffee Company says Kimball Ridge was a perfect fit for its business.

"When I came here to Kimball and Ridgeway and saw the traffic, and saw the medical office buildings, the residential rooftops, the shopping available here, we thought this is really where we need to be because we're more of a neighborhood type of business," said Brad Barber, owner of the Cabin Coffee franchise.

The coffee shop hopes it will be successful enough to show that new developments can thrive at Kimball & Ridgeway.  The company already has locations in other Iowa communities and says despite the down economy, sales have remained strong.

"Every year our business has grown double digits since we opened 8 years ago.  So we never have had that experience of a dip," Barber said.

The store will officially begin brewing up business Friday morning.  And Palace Clothiers is set to open in January. Both businesses are hoping to contribute to the ongoing revitalization of Kimball Ridge.

Cabin Coffee says it was pleased Waterloo was so business friendly, and it was one of the reasons it was attracted to the city.
