Weight lifting may help a painful side effect of cancer treatment

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Hitting the gym for some weight training may help breast cancer patients cut their risk of developing a painful side effect.

Many of these women suffer from lymphedema, a debilitating condition that causes swelling of the limbs.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found women who participated in a slowly progressive weightlifting program slashed their risk of lymphedema by 35 percent.

And that risk was cut by as much as 70 percent in women who had five or more lymph nodes removed during surgery.
