Coalition calls for Iowa to invest in flood protection

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- The Cedar River Watershed Coalition is calling for Iowa to invest in $60 million in flood prevention and water quality measures.

The coalition is made up of lawmakers, local officials, farmers, and business people interested in improving the Cedar River Basin. The group released a list of 40 projects it believes can be implemented over the next two years. The projects include prairie plantings, wetland restoration, and protection of floodplains.

State Sen. Robb Hogg of Cedar Rapids says recent Iowa flood history makes it clear that Iowa needs to lead the way in hazard mitigation and watershed management. Matt Fisher of The Nature Conservancy making the improvements would be a major step toward preventing future flooding.
