Neighbor saves woman from burning garage

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids fire department says a neighbor pulled an 80-year-old woman from her burning garage on Wednesday afternoon.

Roberta Ackman had just arrived home from the grocery store on Wednesday afternoon. As she was unpacking her groceries from the car when it caught on fire. The flames engulfed the garage and spread to the living room and kitchen area of the house.

Ackman's neighbor, 47-year-old Paul Michelson, saw the smoke and helped Ackman out of the garage.

The fire was called in to 911. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to half of the house. The other half only sustained light smoke damage.

Firefighters were not able to identify what caused the fire in the car because it was completely destroyed.

The house is owned by Roberta and Diane Ackman, 51. Diane was not home when the fire happened, but both women were displaced because of the damage. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
