Insight Bowl tickets go on sale

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - It wasn't the big year that Hawkeye football fans were hoping for when it came to bowl hopes. Still, the Hawkeyes are heading to Tempe, Arizona for the Insight Bowl to play against 14th ranked Missouri, the first time the two teams will play in 100 years.

Pairing the Hawkeyes with any bowl game means big business for the University of Iowa and travel agencies. It seems that regardless of their team's destination, Hawkeye loyalists are willing to follow them anywhere.

"The destination really doesn't matter as long as it's a warm weather destination," said Lisa Gilliatt, Vice President of Destinations Unlimited, Inc. in Cedar Rapids. "I think if we were going somewhere cold, the response would be a little bit less."

Gilliatt says Tempe fits the bill for fans looking for shorts and t-shirt weather, and judging by ticket sales so far - the University of Iowa ticket office had sold between 3,000 and 4,000 tickets by midday Monday - fans are hungry for seats in Sun Devil Stadium.

Response to the Insight Bowl announcement has been a little slower than last year's big reveal that the Hawkeyes were Orange Bowl-bound. However, ticket office manager Pam Finke says it's the difference between our weather and Tempe's weather, that will likely end up as a strong selling point.

"Last year, Miami was kind of chilly, and it's chilly in Florida right now, so we're really happy that we're going down to Arizona, and it'll be a nice sunny trip for everybody," said Finke.

There are a handful of agencies like Destinations Unlimited, Inc. offering bowl travel packages, and now is the time to book one; since the game is on December 28th, many flights will depart on the 26th, which is a busy holiday travel date.
