Copper piping stolen from houses owned by school district

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Thieves searching for copper are targeting vacant houses owned by the Waterloo School District.

Police say burglars broke into three homes last month and swiped copper wiring and pipes.

The thefts were discovered Wednesday when school officials noticed five windows broken out of one of the homes.

The price of copper is just under $4 a pound.

Police say they've seen an increase in copper thefts in recent months.
