"Running of the Santas" proves successful for Holiday Hoopla

Santa got the opportunity to shed some of that cookie weight today.

"Running of the Santas" was held in Cedar Falls as part of Holiday Hoopla.

Fifty seven people dressed up as elves, Grinches, snowmen and Santas.

Prizes were given in a variety categories including Best Santa, Best other costume and biggest team.

The biggest team prize went to Elegant Elves, a team made up of friends, family and employees of the business "An Elegant Affair" in Cedar Falls.

"I think the most fun is the community getting together having fun.  You see the kids out there.  You see the teams come together," Lea Ann Saul, Holiday Hoopla committee member, said.

Members of the Cedar Falls Fire Department dressed up as the main characters of the event, Buddy from the movie, "Elf," Rudolf, the Grinch as well as other costumes.

Participants were encouraged to bring a toy for the Salvation Army.

This was the first year for the event, but Saul says it has been such a success they are looking to bring it back next year.

"Lace up your shoes and start getting in shape for next year's run.  It's going to be a good one," Saul said.

The "Hoopla" started the day after Thanksgiving runs until the end of the year.

A trolley ride on Main Street in Cedar Falls will be offered tomorrow night as part of Holiday Hoopla.

The horse-drawn ride will start in the Cedar Falls Library parking lot.
