Manchester Walmart to expand

MANCHESTER (KWWL) -- Retail giant Walmart is looking to expand one of its stores in the near future in Manchester. Store managers met with the city council to talk specifics last week. The biggest draw: it's expected to bring more than 100 jobs. But not everyone likes the idea.

There's a steady flow of customers inside Main Street Market in Manchester Thursday afternoon.

"We live just north of here so it's really convenient for us to come through," shopper Kara Winkowitsch said. Winkowitsch shops here a few times a week. On this particular day she's stocking up for a last minute party.

"So I'm getting a few things to take there," she said.

She's one of many customers who use the local grocery store, owned and operated by Don and Cathy McCurdy.

"I'm not gonna say we are the cheapest but we provide a service. We are open on Sundays and we cater to the person in the isle their house and their business," McCurdy said.

But another business in town is trying to cater to a different crowd. Last week, officials from Walmart met with the city council about an expansion plan. The new store would sit on the same site on the west end of town, be open 24 hours a day, offer more merchandise and add more than 100 jobs.

"The competition is gonna win because they're big, they have corporate dollars, they're going to be able to match anything I do and where does that leave me?" McCurdy said.

For now, it means McCurdy will continue to rely on customers like Winkowitsch. Hoping one businesses expansion doesn't cost him his business. Walmart officials weren't available for comment Thursday.
