Neighbors react to a deputy-involved shooting

SHELL ROCK (KWWL) -- Neighbors are shocked by a deputy-involved shooting Sunday morning. The Butler County Sheriff said deputies responded to a domestic assault call at 1008 Triangle Drive on Sunday.

Sheriff Jason Johnson reports 39-year-old Jeromy Jenkins attacked the deputies with an "edged weapon." He said Jenkins ignored commands from the deputies, forcing one of them to shoot.

Jim Brooks has lived next door to the Jenkins family for about three decades.

"I'm still in shock about this," he said.

Sunday morning, his son Jeff heard something unthinkable coming from their shared back yard.

"My boyfriend Jeff came up and woke me up at 12:30, 1:00 maybe. And he told me, he thought Jeromy just got shot," said Michelle Slechta.

Several members of the Brooks family heard the gun shot, and came out to find Jeromy's body laying on the ground and deputies standing over him. At first, they didn't know if he was alive or dead.

"I was like, oh my gosh mom, is he dead? She said, I don't know. Then we heard him yelling," Slechta recalled.

They say about ten minutes later, an ambulance arrived. Investigators were there six or seven more hours into the morning. But even in the light of day, the neighbors could not believe that what they'd seen was real.

"I'm surprised that the cop, in a small town like this, was quick to draw his gun on him. Even if he did feel Jeromy had a weapon, Jeromy is not threatening like that," said Slechta.

They don't know exactly what happened next door, and are not casting blame. All they want to know, is whether their neighbor is going to survive.

"I don't really care what happened. That doesn't matter. Everybody has quabbles. We just want to know if everybody is okay," Slechta said.

"What I'm worried about is, I can't find out if he's out of the hospital, in the hospital, or whether he's alright. I'm... concerned about Jeromy," added Brooks.

The Sheriff is charging Jenkins with Aggravated Domestic Assault. The deputies involved are on administrative leave.

Neighbors believe Jenkins was transferred from the hospital in Waverly to Iowa City. A spokesperson from University of Iowa Hospitals cannot give us any word on Jenkins' condition, or if he was is in fact a patient there.
