Drinking water warning issued for Wellman

Posted:

WELLMAN (KWWL) -- The city of Wellman has issued a drinking water warning after test results showed a high level of nitrite.

The city says the tests showed nitrite levels of 1.77 mg/L in an isolated area, which is above the standard maximum level of 1.0 mg/L.

The city says infants under six months old should not drink the water. It should also not be used to make infant formula.

The city is flushing hydrants and increasing the chlorine as a short term solution to the problem.

The city issued a similar warning back in August. It says a city-wide reverse osmosis water treatment system will be a permanent solution to the problem. The system is currently being installed and should be in use by July 2011.
