Save lives by adopting fire hydrant

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is encouraging neighbors and businesses to adopt a hydrant.  Snow accumulation and drifts can hide the hydrants, making it impossible for fire crews to find in an emergency situation. In the event of a fire, crews have to locate and shovel out fire hydrants before hooking them up to hoses, taking up precious time to save lives.

Officials are asking you to help keep hydrants clear of snow. It is best to have three feet of clearance on all sides of the fire hydrant. There are nearly 4,800 public hydrants and about 1,800 within the city of Cedar Rapids.
