Johnson County adds four-legged deputy from Slovakia

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- What has four legs, is from Slovakia and goes by the name Danny?  The Johnson County Sheriff's newest deputy.

Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek announced Thursday that Danny, a two and a half year old German Shepard from Slovakia, has joined his department.

Danny is trained in Police Patrol which includes officer protection, criminal apprehension, area searches, article searches, tracking, and narcotics detection. He responds to commands given in German.

Danny will live with his K-9 Handler Patrol Deputy Aaron Hammes, a 7 year veteran of the sheriffs office.

Danny was bought from "Top Dogs" Police K-9 Academy in Evansville, Indiana for $10,000 using Federal JAG grant money. The price included an intensive 6 week training course where Danny and Deputy Hammes graduated top in their class.

With the addition of Danny, the sheriff's office has two working dogs. Deputy Chris Langenberg and "Lazer" are assigned the day shift and Deputy Hammes and Danny will work the night shift.
