Lucky play could earn Tripoli schools thousands

TRIPOLI (KWWL) -- The football season may be over for area high schools, but the competition continues for some.

A very lucky play made by the Tripoli Junior Varsity team has made it to the finals of State Farm Insurance's Friday Night Feats. It's a video contest that puts some of the year's most amazing plays from all across the country up against one another for the chance to win big bucks for the winning school.

For Tripoli it was a last second play that sealed a win and catapulted the JV team into this national contest.

"Riceville comes back and ties the ball game up. We got one possession left and one of these typical Hail Mary plays, Austin Newbrough puts the ball up and two of Riceville's defenders tip it around a little bit and Tyler (Seehase) ends up with the ball in the end zone. Again we walked out of there stealing a ball game. You feel a little guilty walking out there with that win," said JV coach Joe Urbanek.

"It was pretty much just luck. It just kind of bounced right to me. I just caught it," said receiver, Tyler Seehase.

The video of this winning catch has made it through the first round of State Farm's Friday Night Feats, earning Tripoli Schools a $2,500 prize. The overall winner will get $17,500.

Tripoli students have already gotten the ball rolling through social networking sites.

"It's basically on Facebook. People just go on Facebook and vote. That's how the word is getting around basically," said quarterback Austin Newbrough.

This play represents an attitude and belief the coaches pass on to players - never give up.

"It's exactly what you teach your kids. Play till the last whistle and we'll see what happens in the end," Urbanek said.

Tripoli isn't the only eastern Iowa school to take part in this contest. Iowa City High had a play in contention, but did not make it to the second round. Voting runs Dec. 2-10.
