Illinois Senate approves civil unions

SPRINGIELD, ILLINOIS (KWWL)--  The state of Illinois is on the verge of granting official recognition to gay and lesbian couples after senate members approved civil unions Wednesday, 32 to 24.

The unions would give gay couples the same rights as marriage. It now goes to Gov. Pat Quinn to be signed. Gov. Quinn has been a strong supporter.  Critics say this would amount to same-sex marriage, but under a different name. Some senators argued the Legislature shouldn't be talking about civil unions when their state faces a massive budget deficit.
