No action may be the best action for some prostate cancer patients

Posted:

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTES (KWWL) -- For some patients with prostate cancer going without treatment may be the best option.

Researchers from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston say 90 percent of men diagnosed with low-risk, localized prostate cancer have some kind of treatment, like surgery or radiation.

But they say up to 60 percent may not require any kind of intervention because their cancer is unlikely to grow or spread quickly.

The study found simply keeping a close watch on those tumors lead to a better quality of life for patients.

But experts say doctors should be actively involved in watching the tumors for any increased activity.
