Retailers have until end of day to pull alcoholic energy drinks

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Retailers have until the end of the day to remove alcoholic energy drinks like Four Loko and Joose from shelves.  The Food and Drug Administration gave manufacturers warning letters two weeks ago to change the formula of their product or withdraw it from distribution by December 2nd.

The FDA says evidence shows the drinks have led to alcohol poisoning, car accidents and assaults and companies are warned to stop making the drinks.

The caffeine, which is a stimulant, masks the effect of the alcohol, so it's easier to be more intoxicated than you might think.

The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division says retailers that continue to sell them could lose their liquor license or face a civil penalty of $1,000.
