Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Radioactive Iodine treatment is a successful way to treat Thyroid Cancer.  It's one pill, but the side effect is that it makes the patient radioactive for a week.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission used to require patients be quarantined for up to a week but that regulation was recently dropped.  That is leaving some to question of public safety is at risk.

The commission is now re-examining its rules on quarantine.  It plans to release new regulations in the coming weeks.
