People unaware they have HIV

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 1.1 million Americans have HIV. But about 20 percent don't know it. The CDC report also shows fewer HIV infections are being detected late.

The CDC looked at how many people have been tested since guidelines were expanded in 2006 to include routine screening for all teens and adults.

Last year, an estimated 45 percent of Americans ages 18 to 64 reported getting an HIV test at least once. That's up from 40 percent four years ago and represents an increase of 11 million people.

The new information is based on nationwide surveys and state reports.
