Train derails in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Part of a 45-car train, operated by Iowa Northern Railway Company, derailed at about 8:45 Tuesday morning.

Seven cars went off the tracks near 8th Ave. and 3rd St. SE, causing road closures. 8th Ave. was reopened by mid-morning.

We spoke with Craig Coppernoll, painter at Andrews Collision Center, which is just feet away from where the cars went off the tracks.

"It was shaking the ground more than normal," Coppernoll recalled. "It was shaking the floor, and then came to a stop and we looked out and it was derailed."

One of the seven cars that went off the tracks dumped a full load of grain. West Side Salvage used a vacuum truck to haul the grain away, while Coonrod Crane Service lifted the cars back onto the tracks.

A spokesperson for Iowa Northern Railway Co. expected the mess to be cleaned up by late Tuesday or early Wednesday. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
