UPDATE: Grain train derails in Cedar Rapids


CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Seventh and 8th Avenues have been reopened in Cedar Rapids after a train derailment Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 9 a.m., a train derailment closed the 8th Avenue Southeast area at the 4th Street railroad crossing.

According to CRANDIC who owns the rail line the train was traveling on through Cedar Rapids, a 45 car grain train was traveling from northern Iowa when 7 cars popped off the track. One car ended up on its side. Crews are investigating what caused the train to derail.

The train is owned by Iowa Northern Railway Company.

Ninth Avenue at 2nd Street and 3rd Street Southeast will remain closed for the morning.
