Dubuque's Love Light Star now glowing

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The Finley Hospital's Love Light Star is now glowing for its 19th year.

Those honoring or remembering somebody by sponsoring a light on the star gathered Sunday evening for the annual lighting ceremony.

A Christmas tree covered in cards with the honorees' names lit up at the same time the star on top of the hospital lit up.

LaVon Klauer and her family has attended every single year, in memory of Klauer's husband, who passed away 19 years ago.

"More years than I can count, we turn around and look at the tree, and there's a light that blinks, and so we know that's Mel, that he is there," Klauer said. "It's just a wonderful thing they do here. Wonderful people put this on, and it's just a blessing."

Organizers said The Finley Hospital has raised about $80,000 over the past 19 years through Love Light Star donations. Money goes for expenses outside the budget, such as recliners and TVs for hospital rooms, artwork and improvements to the cancer survivor garden.
