Hawkeye Express returns to Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Hawkeye Express has returned to Waterloo for the year.

The train travels to Iowa City each August for the Iowa Hawkeyes' football season to move fans from satellite parking areas in Coralville to Kinnick Stadium.

The train has been used after the end of the football season the past two years to raise money for flood relief.  The Express moved holiday shoppers between Palo and Vinton in the month of December, and raised as much as $35,000 each year.

Iowa Northern says the fundraiser won't run this year, but plans to bring it back next holiday season.

The Express will stay in Waterloo until next August, when it will again travel south.

In the meantime, one car will be repainted, while other cars will undergo routine maintenance.
