Sundown Mountain Ski Resort open for business

DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -- Eastern Iowa's only ski resort opened Thanksgiving weekend.

General manager Mark D said the resort opened with a third of its runs ready to go.

"Right now we've got a 10- to 20-inch base, and, as I mentioned, about 35 percent of the area is open," Dietz said.

He said the resort has already pumped eight million gallons of water into making the snow.

"We'll continue to make snow and hopefully get more and more to the customers every time they come out," Dietz said.

Thanksgiving weekend is always the resort's target opening, though Dietz said the weather only lets that happen about 50 percent of the time.

"Winter's short here in Iowa," Dietz said. "Actually, typically, we have about a hundred-day season, so here's day one. So, we'll get going and hopefully we'll stay open all the way through the middle of March."

He said opening day looked good, with 700 to 1,000 customers by mid-afternoon.

The resort will be open Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend and then again the following Friday. Dietz said whether the resort stays open for the season after that all depends on Mother Nature.
