Many avoid busy malls, shop locally

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)--  When Black Friday comes to mind, you typically think of crowds of people rushing to find the best deal at big department stores or malls. But, locally-owned shops are holding their own, too. They may not have opened quite as early, and the lines may not have been quite as long, but stores say business was booming Friday.

On Main Street in Cedar Falls, the big push to shop local was on retailers minds. At Sealed With a Kiss Friday night, workers say business was actually much busier than in years past.

''We saw a lot of difference in our sales today. We were very busy. I would say we probably doubled sales from last year, and last year was wonderful, too. We've been really blessed; lots of people, they had to wait at times, but they were patient,'' said Mary Taylor of Sealed With a Kiss.

The store was one of many businesses that stayed open late Friday night to help kickoff Holiday Hoopla in the downtown area.

Some economists suggest that out of every hundred dollars spent at locally-owned stores about sixty-eight dollars go back to the community in the form of taxes, payroll, and other expenditures.
