AEGON hosts 31st Thanksgiving meal

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -As hundreds enjoyed a warm Thanksgiving meal at AEGON in Cedar Rapids, everywhere you look, there's great tradition.

Take accordion player Ron Johnson, who's played at the event for 20 years

Then there's 91 year old Fran Sonka of Marion, who has brought with friends and family for better than two decades.

''I found these people that were alone like I am, and they just didn't have nobody or no place to go, and I just started taking them in my car,'' she said.

Or even the close to 200 volunteers, who pour their hearts into making the day a special one.

''Every year this has become a tradition for them, and it's a bit of a competition to get a volunteer position here,'' said Cindy Nodorft of AEGON.

For 31 years, the meal has been provided for one important reason.

''It's Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving is about fellowship, about being with others, and we think it's important that no one be alone on Thanksgiving day,'' Nodorft said.

Word has gotten out about AEGON's free Thanksgiving dinner.  This year the company provided turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and pie to more than 12 hundred senior citizens.

For everyone involved, it's easy to see the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

''I'm thankful for all my friends and family, and I guess I should say my health,'' Sonka said.

And for Sonka, there's plans to be right back in the AEGON building with her loved ones for years to come.
